Smart Meter Installers are responsible for safe installation, exchange, commission, decommission and ongoing maintenance of Smart Metering systems and associated equipment. The successful installer needs to carry out a high level of safety critical activities whilst working in customer properties so needs to have a disciplined, responsible and professional approach to work and customer service excellence.

If you have got good practical skills, can get on easily with people and want a career that gets you out and about, this may be the right job for you.

Entry Requirements

You do not need any specific qualifications to start training as a Smart Meter Installer though some employers may prefer you to have a minimum of four GCSEs or equivalent qualifications.

You WILL be required to complete a Basic Disclosure prior to starting any employment

As a Smart Meter Installer, you will need:

  • Ability in maths
  • Good practical skills
  • Good organisational skills
  • Excellent customer care
  • The ability to work on your own
  • Excellent communication skills to explain how meters work
  • Self-motivation and a commitment to your career development
  • An awareness of safe working practices

As well as covering essential areas such as communication and customer service, you can choose the qualification that demonstrates the specialist knowledge and skills you have developed in the electrical and gas duel fuel smart meter installations and swaps. You will learn in training centre/workshop and you will also need on the job in the work environment from your employer.

Assessment will also take place in the workplace and will include practical tasks and questioning.

Achievement of the Diploma gives training equivalent to CMA1 and MET1 but does not provide a route into other areas within the ACS gas scheme.
